ETHNICITY: Navajo and Haitian
"People typically assume I’m black, but once they see my curly hair and the shade of my skin they figure I’m multiracial. However, they remain unsure about my other identity."
"What makes me frustrated with how people perceive me relates to my acceptance to Duke. Since I am half Navajo and half Haitian, I was told by peers that I got in because of my ethnicity - that Affirmative Action was the reason for my acceptance and that I couldn’t have earned it on my own."
"Sadly, race has affected my college experience because I haven’t been able to branch out to make friends with individuals who look physically different than me. Arriving at Duke, there seemed to be such a large amount of students, but as a new student, the people I automatically could reach out to were those I met at Black Student Alliance."
