"We certainly have a bad rap. I hate to group us with the 'we' and be associated with a lot of the people that I’m referring to. I think it’s a general misunderstanding of the many different complexities to the situation. I don’t think a lot of people understand the complexities of race in the United States and the politics of it. Growing up in the South, there’s still a lot of segregation, but people choose to ignore it through things like color-blindness"

"If you don’t acknowledge race in the south, then you’re completely disregarding the history of slavery, the history of the civil rights movement, the history of segregation and so much more. I can’t see a future where race doesn’t exist, because that means not acknowledging history, and I think that’s a problem."
